Caring for Little Humans’ Eyes

The Latest in Myopia Control Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common in children. It is a refractive error whereby, the affected eye can see near objects clearly but is blurred for distant objects.

Symptoms of Myopia in Children

It’s important to recognise the signs of myopia early. Common symptoms in children include:

  • Squinting
  • Sitting too close to screens
  • Difficulty seeing the whiteboard
  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • Complaints of headaches

If you notice any of these symptoms in your little human, it may be time to consider myopia
management.

Treatments at LEC Eye Centre to slow the progression

Atropine eyedrops

  • Nightly use of Atropine eyedrops
  • Prescription of standard glasses of appropriate ‘power’
  • Regular monitoring of refraction and axial length
  • Minimum treatment period of 2 years required as the treatment effect may be better in the second year in some children

If there is a continual progression of myopia, a combination treatment of Myopine eyedrops with Myopia Control glasses may be considered.

Repeated Low-level Red Light Therapy (RLRL)

LEC Eye Centre is the first in Perak to offer this cutting-edge treatment that combines ease of use with effective results.

  • Non-invasive, low commitment, cost-effective
  • 3 minutes per session, 2 times per day, 5 days per week
  • Treatments will be done at home
  • Minimum treatment period of 2 years required as the treatment effect may be better in the second year in some children

Myopia Control Lenses

These are glasses or contact lenses which are specifically designed to control the rate of progression of myopia by reducing the stimulus for elongation of the eyeball. These need to be worn for a minimum of 12 hours to have a moderate effect on myopia control.
