World Sight Day

World Sight Day 2010
World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness started by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) as part of VISION 2020: The Right To Sight. VISION 2020 is the global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness, coordinated jointly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the IAPB, the aim of which is to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020.

For the first time in Perak, Lee Eye Centre in collaboration with the Perak State Health Department, had organized an event to commemorate this meaningful day. This served as an opportunity to increase the local public's awareness towards blinding eye diseases. A public forum was held, which involved speakers (eye specialists) from the public and private sectors in Perak and Kuala Lumpur; an exhibition was set up, with pictorial and audio visual illustrations of the signs and symptoms and treatment of the various eye diseases, and free eye screening for the public was also performed. Lee Eye Centre also carried out a month-long free eye screening service for members of various welfare homes in Perak. From these screening activities, 60 suitable candidates have been identified to undergo free cataract surgery at Lee Eye Centre.
